One major outcome has been the OptIPortal, a 21st-century “personal computer” consisting of a tiled display wall, connected to a computer cluster, connected to multi-gigabit national and international networks. OptIPortals are the appropriate termination device for 10-Gigabit networks, as the size of today’s datasets exceeds the resolution of earlier generations of display systems. The OptIPortal runs EVL’s Scalable Adaptive Graphics Environment (SAGE), enabling users to simultaneously access and share ultra-high-resolution visualizations from a variety of data sources, participate in high-definition video-conferencing calls, browse the Web, and/or show PowerPoint presentations - all at the same time. SAGE enables collaborative teams to juxtapose all this information on OptIPortals, creating large “posters,” or “Cyber-Mashups,” as they work together to solve complex problems. National and international advanced user communities are becoming early adopters of OptIPuter and OptIPortal architectures, thereby creating a naiscent OptIPlanet Collaboratory, in which multiple scientists can analyze complex datasets while seeing and talking to each other as if they were physically in the same room. EVL is mapping this OptIPlanet of SAGE users, particularly since these sites are not only users of SAGE, but contributors to its ongoing development. Together, the OptIPlanet Collaboratory is creating a persistent distributed facility to enable synergistic research and development of next-generation end-user tools for scientific visualization and collaboration over a global Grid interconnected by high-speed networks.
