Carla Gabriela Floricel has been awarded funding by the UI Health Cancer Center to offset the cost of travel and registration to present her cancer-related work at the IEEE VIS 2023 Conference held in Melbourne, Australia October 22-27, 2023. Floricel, a fifth-year Computer Science PhD student and research assistant at EVL. Her advisor is CS Professor and EVL faculty Liz Marai, who is also a Cancer Center member, part of the Cancer Center”s Cancer Prevention and Control research program.

Floricel’s research is in visual data science, primarily medical data visualization. Her work is a collaboration with Marai and clinical oncologists from MD Anderson at the University of Texas and data scientists from the University of Iowa. The goal of their work is to better understand symptoms that head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy are facing during and after cancer treatment.
