Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Mentoring Program

URL: http://www.imsa.edu The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is an internationally recognized pioneering educational institution created by the state of Illinois to develop talent and leadership in mathematics, science and technology in outstanding high school students. As part of its innovative educational experiences, IMSA has partnered with the University of Illinois at Chicago and other Illinois institutions of higher education to mentor exceptional students. The Student Inquiry and Research Program is intended to provide a framework for students to pursue compelling questions of interest, conduct original or mentored research, create and invent products and services, and develop business. The program consists of weekly visits to the institution for a two semester period, where volunteer mentors advisors guide students in quality investigations. EVL has actively participated in this program for several years, primarily advising students in advanced visualization and networking technology research and development. Most recently (Sept. 2006), EVL’s Post-doctoral Research Associate, Xi Wang counseled IMSA student, Jonathan Ronchetti in understanding, developing and enhancing EVL’s network monitoring software application, netLasso. Jonathan actively participated in the development, debugging and testing of netLasso, working with Dr. Wang and EVL researcher Sungwon Num to first learn the application’s existing source code, then to run tests of the software on local and international network links, and finally to develop a graph drawing module to articulate the results of the network test for analysis and communication to systems and network administrators. As part of this effort, Jonathan Learn learned basic Java programming, parser, regular expressions, and rrdtool and applied this knowledge to refinement of the netLasso tool, which is used widely among EVL and its advanced networking collaborators.
