The initial goal of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of creating a research and service software platform that can be used to test a number of hypotheses about brain / behavior relationships using eye tracking technology, and to develop from it an assessment tool, remediation technologies and optimization strategies for a wide variety of clinical problems and non clinical challenges that come under the heading of human enhancement and performance technology.

The problem of damage, disease, and dysfunction in a number of clinical categories, and the need to optimize performance in normal individuals facing stressful situations has not been met by current methods of evaluation and treatment. Illness categories such as autism, ADHD and dementia are examples of the clinical problems that need enhanced evaluation methods. Those in jobs that are stressful such as medical residents asked to function without sleep, athletes who need to excel and those in the military in combat situations are examples of those with optimization needs. Learning By Design Inc. is partnering with the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Software Technologies Research Center / Electronic Visualization Laboratory, and several local Illinois clinics, to develop ETARS: Eye Tracking Assessment and Remediation System. New methodologies based on a consideration of neural network theory and a complex adaptive systems approach are being explored towards the development of an innovative technology using eye-tracking that will remedy this problem and enhance current evaluation methods.
